Design trends come and go, but there are interior styles that remain evergreen and perennially popular – one of them is mid-century modern. A broad term to describe the popular architecture, furniture and interiors of the American postwar period of the 1950s and 60s, mid-century modern design has only grown in appeal over the years. We see it in the clean simple lines and curves of furniture pieces of that period, which were designed with functionality in mind.
Emblematic pieces include seats such as the bent plywood chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames that are still produced and very much in demand today, attesting to the design’s timeless appeal. The style’s defining colour palette features warm muted tones that pair well with the wooden furniture pieces in the room.
We spotlight two local homes that reference the iconic mid-century modern look, bringing it into the present with contemporary touches and materials such as tiles. Check out the accompanying moodboard to discover the tiles you can use to create the look for yourself!

Less-is-more Modernist furniture requires clean canvases to let their well-designed shapes shine. For this walk-up apartment in the Joo Chiat area (pictured above), local design firm The Monocot Studio used white walls, light wood panelling, and Tr3nd concrete-inspired tiles to create a bright and neutral background. The wooden mid-century modern style dining set takes centerstage against this scene, with a drop lamp in a soft shape to accentuate the space. Rugs and a tufted fabric sofa bring texture to the space.

The concrete-inspired Concept and Tr3nd tiles provide light-coloured surfaces for walls and floors to contrast with wooden furnishings. Timber-inspired tiles from the Borealis and Woodland collections are flooring options if you wish for more warmth in your space. Throw on floor rugs in textured organic materials to define spatial zones.

In contrast with the previous home, peach, brown and dark teal give this apartment in Tampines by Shed Studio its expressive mid-century modern identity. The bold earthy colour scheme works with furnishings in clean geometric shapes and lines. A mix of textures and materials, such as the half-wall of glossy tiles in the living area, matte painted surfaces, and translucent glass bricks create a visually stimulating space grounded by a neutral base of Tr3nd concrete-inspired tiles in Smoke on the floor.

The Mutina Tierras tiles are great for colouring your walls with natural terracotta hues, while Look subway tiles in blu provide the right dose of gloss for bathrooms or feature walls. For flooring to pull the look together, consider the versatile Tr3nd concrete-inspired tiles which can go with a multitude of design themes.
