Renowned product designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec pushed out their first collection for Mutina, named Pico, in 2011. This award-winning collection saw the start of a beautiful 10-year relationship with Mutina, and with it a constant exchange of ideas and thoughts which also produced Rombini and Piano. To mark this milestone, the designers revisited and refreshed the well-loved characteristics of classics Pico and Rombini, and introduced innovative ideas for surfacing material in three new collections Pico Bois, Punto, and Bloc, a 3D terracotta brick for architectural structures. Although delightfully different, these collections are linked by a common thread and can be combine to create impressive cohesive environments. We introduce them below.
Pico
The Pico collection features tiles which are texturally rich, with its pattern of raised dots called Up, and sunken dots named Down, which are accentuated with the colours red or blue. An earthy nude colour named Argile now joins the existing palette of Gris (grey) and Blanc (cream). In addition a new finish, Pico Satin, which has a satin atomised glaze, brings a surface of absolute whiteness that is also soft and pleasant to the touch.
Pico Bois
Pico Bois has the honour of being Mutina’s first wood floor, made of natural oak inspired by the toasty hue of wood in the homes of Brittany, where the Bouroullec brothers are from. What makes this floor different is the familiar graphic pattern of the Pico tiles. The red and blue dots of Pico have been impressed on the surface to enhance the texture of wood and give it that unique hammered texture. Pico Bois comes in 7cm by 49cm planks.
Punto
A play on the raised and sunken dots of Pico, Punto supersizes those dots to create wonderful effects for walls when the tiles are installed on a large surface, evident when the light hits. Both Matt and Glossy finishes are available, each in five colours. The Matt finish provides texture with a calm contemporary personality while Glossy is luxurious and captivating, especially Brun (brown) and Vert (green) which have exceptional colour rendering thanks to the tiles’ traditional double-firing production method. Punto is available in a single size of 4cm by 31.5cm.
Rombini
The winning Rombini collection brought groundbreaking 3D definition to walls when it was first launched, and now two new sizes of Triangle join the family. Triangle has a shape similar to a paper accordion with its peaks and valleys. The two existing sizes of Small and Large is now joined by Extra Small (2cm by 31.5cm) for greater versatility. Also, a new glossy finish in the colours Blanc, Gris, Rose, Vert and Brun are applied to Extra Small and to the other sizes too. The reflection off the glossy surfaces, combined with the shadows in play, create delightful contrasts of colour.
Bloc
A fun collection, the terracotta brick Bloc is childlike yet conjures up design that is graphically bold when repeated, say in the form of a standing partition or as the base of a long counter. Leave the holes empty to let the light through or fill them with Tube, a wooden accessory available in red and blue. Bloc comes in a natural version, and four colours in both a Matt and Glossy finish, in a single size of 13cm by 13cm by 10cm.
