4 Essential After-Care Tips for Post-Tile Installation

Tiles are one of the main staples to have in homes, maintaining the look of your tiles is essential to keeping your home looking its best.

Many believed that aftercare for post-tile installations would be easy and it wouldn’t be significant enough to prioritize them, thus many times it gets overlooked once installations are completed.

However, many key factors have to be taken into consideration to prolong our tiles’ lifespan and to prevent frequent changes for them, this will then ensure that we can be more time-efficient & cost-effective in the long run.

So how do we keep our tiles looking brand new and protect them from wear and tear?

#1 - Protection from Staining & Scratches

Protect your tiles from stain and wear by applying sealant to grout lines & joints after tiles have been grouted. This will also help to prevent bacteria, dirt, dust, grime, and mold from becoming trapped in between them.

Ensure spills are promptly cleaned to avoid staining. Avoid using harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or scrubbing tools i.e. steel wool or scouring pads, as they can damage the finish or surface of your tiles or cause dulling and discolouration.

Placing heavy furniture carefully on tiles, and not dragging them across floors can also help to prevent scratches and marks to be caused. Using necessary pieces of furniture like carpets, mats or rugs can also help to ensure scratches and stains caused by spills are prevented on floor tiles too. Ideally, using these flooring furniture with non-skid backing is recommended for your tiles to prevent scuffing and scratching.

Note: RICE Tiles are generally easy to clean during spills but these are additional tips for homeowners to keep in mind!

#2 - Protection from Sunlight

Keeping your tiles looking brand new and fresh as the first day you got them can be a challenge due to the harsh UV rays of the sun, especially when we’re living in a tropical city like Singapore and if they’re used outdoors. However, we can ensure our tiles stay in pristine condition by taking a few proactive steps.

First, regularly apply a sealant to your tiles to protect them from the sun’s UV rays. This will help ensure your tiles stay in top condition. Next, consider installing window coverings, such as blinds or curtains, to help reduce the amount of sunlight that directly reaches your tiles.

Ensure only tiles that are ideal for outdoor or exterior usage are used to counter the direct sunlight emitted by the sun as these tiles generally come with an added layer of protection. It’s vital to use UV protection properties cleaner for both your indoor & outdoor tiles too.

#3 - Eliminate Potential of Leaks

Leaks are one of the key factors that can quickly ruin your tiles’ condition. Especially in humid environments like bathrooms & kitchens. Therefore, it’s crucial to ensure your fixtures and water barriers are in order. Make sure your shower head is not leaking as this can cause the grout to crumble or crack over time!

Adding new shower curtains & rods that are tightly secured in place will help to eliminate the potentiality of further leaks. Add shower door sweepers to prevent leaks from underneath the shower doors if you have such shower style implemented in your house’s bathrooms. Another great way to keep your bath or shower tiles dry is by placing a rug over them where you can stand when stepping out of the shower area.

For both bathroom & kitchen areas, it’s vital to ensure tiles used for bathroom flooring/wall & kitchen backsplashes are installed with epoxy grout and sealant during the installation phase. To ensure bacteria, dirt, and moisture are unable to seep through the grout lines. And to also ensure the kitchen and shower areas are kept dry when they’re not in use.

After each shower, make sure to wipe down the shower tiles with a shower squeegee. This is especially relevant if you want your tiles to last as long as possible! This can help prevent your shower tiles from getting shower mold or mildew when it’s wiped down after each use. This is an excellent way of protecting shower and bath tiles in one go!

#4 - Regular Cleaning & Maintenance

Once tiles are installed in your home or work spaces, it’s crucial to ensure that these tiles are thoroughly cleaned to remove any possible dirt, grime, and grout residue that commonly forms a white-coloured haze over the surface of the tiles when they’re first installed.

Regular cleaning & maintenance is also essential to maintain the appearance and lifespan of our tiles. Start by cleaning your tiles with mild soap and warm water. This will help remove dirt and debris and keep your tiles looking clean and fresh.

Sweeping or vacuuming regularly helps to remove any loose dirt and dust, followed by mopping weekly with mild detergent and warm water to keep the tiles clean and free of build-up.

Be sure to regularly check for cracked or chipped tiles and grout lines too, and replace or refill them as needed.
