You see them on the walls of hip hangouts such as cafes and restaurants, chic boutiques and stylish homes. Zellige tiles captivate us with their uneven textures and super glossy finish, creating a look of artisan craftsmanship that brings a rustic yet contemporary character to spaces. Traditional Zellige tiles are made of clay that can only be found in one region in Morocco and are handmade in small batches using primitive methods. Now tile brands are replicating the charm of Zellige on a commercial scale and making them available to a wider audience. Used in small spaces, the reflection of light off the tiles makes the area look visually larger and creates depth on the flat surfaces. The tiles’ tonal variations and imperfect qualities are also perfect for creating a decorative feature wall in any part of the home. Game to try Zellige in your space? Take a look at this bounty of options!
Mélange
The 10cm by 10cm tiles of the Mélange collection replicate the Zellige effect with nine colours which include punchy red, calming aquamarine, mustard yellow, and forest green. The others are neutral hues of black, grey and white. The unique colour variations of the tiles, coupled with the shine of the glaze make them shimmer in the light. Contrast their rustic textures with furnishings in clean modern profiles for a contrast between tradition and modernity.
Sixty
Paying homage to clay, the mother of ceramics, is the Sixty tile collection which comprises tiles in various textures, available in seven pastel hues and black. Minibrick Lux, a subway tile in 5cm by 15cm, expresses the effect of Zellige tile with its unique texture and glossy finish. The Minibrick Lux can be combined with its matte counterpart Minibrick Matt to create a pattern using the contrast of their finishes! Or try the tiles on the floor in your favourite parquet pattern.
Look
The Look tiles comes in a predominantly cool colour palette with three green-blues of Avio, Blu and Olivia, two warm yellows of Beige and Ocra, black and white. The down-to-earth colour schemes are evocative of nature, with imperfect surfaces and tonal variations giving off a wonderfully organic feel. Consider the coloured tiles for your bathrooms or outdoor spaces for a touch of nature! The large sizes of the subway tiles, at 6cm by 24cm, are also unusual and suited for large surfaces.
Gleeze
Tiles from the Gleeze collection feature decorative patterns as rich as their coloured glazes. The super-glossy Eye and Egg 3D concave and convex designs resemble handmade pottery and are available in five colours which include the mesmerising greens and blues of Giada, Grigio and Turchese, in addition to Bianco and Beige. The tiles come in three sizes of 10cm by 10cm, 5cm by 15cm, and 7.5cm by 20cm.
Abacus
The Zellige effect aside, the appeal of the Abacus collection lies strongly in its five attractive and trendy colours of Senape (mustard), Cipria (pink), Petrolio (teal), Amaranto (brick red) and Lavanda (lavender), in addition to the classic hues of Calce (white), Carbone (black), Corda (beige) and Piombo (grey). The high gloss finish amplifies the saturated colours and softly uneven surfaces of the tiles which are influenced by the traditional majolica ceramics of the Mediterranean. A matte, and Plisse version is also offered, which has a 3D ridge design. The tiles come in one size of 7.5cm by 20cm, and in two thicknesses of 9.5mm and 11.5mm.
